Reverence for Life Essay Prize

Essay PrizePromoting the philosophy of Reverence for Life, the charity Reverence for Life (UK) announces its inaugural essay prize.  This philosophy was developed by Dr Albert Schweitzer, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize winner 1952.

Reverence for Life is best defined individually, but here is one useful definition:

"Reverence for Life says that the only thing we are really sure of is that we live and want to go on living. This is something that we share with everything else that lives, from elephants to blades of grass – and, of course, every human being. So we are brothers and sisters to all living things, and owe to all of them the same care and respect, that we wish for ourselves.”

(For more about Reverence for Life, please visit www.albertschweitzer.info/discovery.html)

Our essay prize is worth £200 and asks how Reverence for Life can affect our everyday lives.

The London Triathlon At ExCel

Excel in TriathlonSummer 2003: Held on the 2nd August 2003 for the first time at Excel in London's Docklands, it turned out to be the world's second largest Triathlon ever, with over 5000 competitors of which about 2500 were first time participants. The three parts of the event consisted of a 750m swim, a 20km cycle run and a 5km sprint.

Initiated by the Event Management Team, ExCel itself entered four teams of 3 competitors each, and they were all participating on behalf of Friends of Albert Schweitzer (UK) and the Dr. Schweitzer's Hospital Fund, raising the amazing sum of £1377 in sponsorship, which together with the Gift Aid amounts to £1724 - a most welcome sum in our first year of operation as FoAS(UK).
