Can we Learn
21. Sep 2009 at 10:22

Is there a way to learn from the past? Is humanity locked into behaviors of the past? Each generation has the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of the preceding generations, yet we repeat the cycle time and again? Does this mean there is no hope for humanity to learn? Is there any chance for humanity to break the cycle of violence? Certain religions, teach of the circle of life, some speak of free will while others appear to be passive on the subject. Does this indicate that humanity is locked into a never-ending, ring of behaviors? I there any chance to break the cycle of war and self-destruction does humanity actual have choices its behavior? If there is no hope then are we condemned to a never-ending battle for dominance and how does this make us any better then the animal kingdom?

In the US it appears that we have a President is tolerant enough to at least entertain the concept of talking to our foes. Yet, the conservative’s are against such behavior claiming that it is a show of weakness, does it really show weakness to an enemy, that we respect and accept that they have a point of view. Any hostilities between warring parties can only come to a conclusion, when there are no participants, other the leaders understand that their behavior is acceptable to the majority of the lead. So, why do we continue to cling to the ideas of war as necessary when in fact there are answers? Conservatives, claim family values, and the desire to save money and other outmoded answers from the past that have never worked, nor show much signs of working in the future. Truth be told these are the signs of weakness we show are enemies, or unwillingness to learn and grow from our primitive state and embrace the future that conservative appear so fearful of changing and growing. Are they wrong, not completely, like with ever other question humanity faces there must be room for new ideas and growth in the citizenry in order for change to be brought about. Not all the ideas from the past are wrong nor are all the new ideas worth the change, however if neither side is willing to talk to instead of at each other there is no hope for change to come to fruition.

Is it not time to show that there may come a time in the future for humanity to grow and climb out the depth of ignorance and animal like behaviors show hope a new way? Or, has time run out for hope to lead our way out of the morass?

Oh BJ, how I feel your frustration and despair!
Your questions and pleas go right to the heart!
Sometimes it does seem that we have learnt nothing and seem even to go backwards. But when we look at history, is there not a lot of evidence that "development", - the development of humanity as a species, does indeed go in cycles, as everything else does in Nature. Day and night; summer and winter.
I think we are in winter now. But I fervently believe in the coming of spring, - and perhaps with Obama in the White House, the first spring -like signs have started to show. We mustn't expect it to happen overnight though, and severe frosts may still be ahead.
I do believe, that each spring starts on a new level and beings new challenges for mankind (including womankind). It sometimes helps to count the achievements so far: although we don't seem to manage anything 100 %, there are still substantial achievements in areas like slavery, colour-prejudice, equality between the sexes, the beginnings of widespread democracy, torture, wide-spread literacy, animal rights, human rights,- I'm sure you can think of others.
It seems to me though, that we are at a cross-roads: After a millennium of incredible technical and mechanical advances, we are now challenged to learn to handle and to cope with the effects and powers of these advances. Whilst there is guidance from the past about this lesson, essentially it is a new situation for our species and for the planet and it is a test of our resiliance, intelligence and imagination. At the core lies the question of whether we can, - in large numbers, not just the odd guru,-  go beyond the present ego-dominated state of our psyche.
There is every hope that we will! - I am content to believe.
Time has not yet run out for hope to lead us out of this morass!

BJ and Percy, I ask these same questions every day and it seems that as individuals and as nations consisting of individuals, we do not learn much from the past.  The old adage, ' History repeats itself' is certainly enough 'proof' that supports this human flaw.

The modern Conservatives are in my opinion, very violent, aggressive and confrontational due to greed and exude an elitist attitude and patriotism toward other countries as well as individuals in their own country.  My psychological analyses of their behavior indicates that they are weak, fearful and insecure people who identify with power as a necessity to protect themselves.  These same conservatives are typically religious people too which also indicates their need to protect themselves from burning in hell and they often use religion as a platform to justify their self serving behaviors.

My curiosity about why history repeats itself  relates to human behavior.  Let's face it, how many truly historically instrumental figures in our world have actually led to change?  They are few are far between.  How many Dr. Schweitzers have there been?  So, I would tend to think that human genetics has a lot to do with whether we repeat/follow or whether we lead/change.  I would be very interested in researching the DNA of people like Hitler and Bush vs. Obama, Carter, Jesus.  Catch my meaning here?

Characteristically, those who blaze a new trail are considered freaks and mavericks and humanity fears supporting them for fear of being judged by others.
