The Garden ( personal update)
12. Jul 2008 at 19:41

Hi Folks,
I just wanted to stop by and update you on my recent experience with my neighbor, the rabbits and the man's garden.
I had a revelation today.  I was looking out my kitchen window at the garden that led to the demise of all the animals in my area.  I noticed that there were 3 people in the garden picking vegetables and it occured to me that if it were not for the garden, people would not visit there at all.  In fact, this man would never have any ' friends' or visitors.  He has no family and his wife left him a few months ago ( divorced him).  He doesn't really know how to relate to people and his relationships are rather dysfunctional to say the least.  He uses people, they use him and they care nothing about each other. I've watched him relate to people this way for years.   But, my point is that it became quite clear to me that this man identifies his worth as a human being with the garden.  No wonder he's so protective of it- willing to kill anything that appears to threaten his only source of attention. It's an extension of his self, his ego.  If he had no garden, he would have no life at all and certainly no friends.
I'm doing much better these days but I still find it difficult to look into my garden.  There are no animals now- no squirrels, no rabbits.  Archie, a male rabbit came into the garden a few days ago looking for Luna and he sat by her shrub for a half hour waiting for her to come out.  When she didn't appear,  he came over to where she was buried and must have detected her scent.  He briefly sat on her grave and then he left and I haven't seen him since.  Mini, Luna's daughter has disappeared as well and I would imagine succumbed to poison.
On an interesting note, I had a visitor last Friday(Percy was right) and it was a groundhog.  I've never had a groundhog before and I found this to be very exciting.  Strange though that Luna dies and a groundhog appears!  I photographed the darling and surprisingly, the little guy just came right up to me with not a care in the world.  A few days later, I noticed that in several conversations, radio shows and even in the presidential election speeches, groundhogs were mentioned!  Every where I turned, someone was saying 'groundhog'.  So I did a little research on groundhog symbolism and thought I would share my findings with you.

The groundhog represents 'awakening'.  Whether it's awakening from winter or perhaps awakening to wisdom or even rebirth ( maybe Luna is a groundhog now!)
I should also note that as I skimmed through some recent photographs of Luna and her friends, I noticed some really odd photos of the man's garden covered in black crows ( symbolic of death) as usual. There were more black crows than dirt!  Seriously and the photo is astounding actually.

I also found an interesting article written by someone regarding the movie, Ground hog day: You can read the entire article at :

But, I'll just note here some of the very interesting points made in this article ( since I have limited characters)
Groundhog Day:
Breakthrough to the True Self

An example of an exceptional work of moral fiction is the apparently minor comedy, Groundhog Day,  which shows us a character who has to be exiled from normal life so he can discover that he is in exile from himself.
And so it goes, day after day, as this misanthrope of a human being finds himself trapped in Punxsutawney on groundhog day in what science fiction would refer to as a time loop. If he does nothing different, events will repeat themselves as they were on the original day. But if he changes his behavior, people will respond to his new actions, opening up all kinds of possibilities for playing with the unfolding of events. Either way, with each "new" day, he alone remembers what happened in previous editions of the same day.
"When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life.

In other words, having accepted the conditions of life and learned the pleasures afforded by human companionship, he is no longer like all those people who fear life's travails, and try to use the weather forecast, by human or groundhog, to control events. He accepts "winter" as an opportunity.

What is so powerful about Groundhog Day is the way it lets us experience what it would be like to make a breakthrough like this in our own lives. The movie shows us a character who is like the worst in ourselves. He is arrogant and sarcastic, absorbed in his own discomforts, without hope, and cut off from other people. Whereas most of us go semi-automatically through most of our (very similar) days, he is forced to stop and treat each day like a world onto itself, and decide how to use it. In the end, he undergoes a breakthrough to a more authentic self in which intimacy, creativity and compassion come naturally.
The movie hits on a message that is commonly found elsewhere and that appears to express an essential truth. When we get beyond denial and resentment over the conditions of life and death, and accept our situation, it tells us, then life ceases to be a problem and we can become authentic and compassionate.

My groundhog experience was definitely symbolic of awakening and transformation in the wake of Luna's death.

Love & Peace,  Lizzie

For some reason I did not see this entry until today.
Now I have read the full article, looked up Groundhog to find that we over here in Europe call it a Marmot and am thoughrowly intreaged and moved by the whole story and your experience. Thank you! I now just look forward to the chance to see the film.
May this Christmas have the quality of an awakening for all of us!

Merry Christmas Percy!

Oh yes, the Marmot.  It didn't occur to me that you would have a different name for this animal.  I haven't seen that groundhog or any groundhog since the day I buried Luna.  How odd.
I hope you have an opportunity to watch the movie and that you enjoy it.
I don't know if you're familiar with the Groundhog celebration here in the USA.  We have this silly tradition that on Groundhog Day in February, the people of a town in Pennsylvania look to see if Phil, the groundhog that they have in a box ( presumably by trapping it Sad ) and whether or not he sees his own shadow that day will determine if we have 6 more weeks of winter weather or not.  It's such a silly, yet HUGE event.
I hate to dampen the holiday spirit but I've had such an awful year full of disease and death.  Today is the Solstice and since I'm a Pagan of sorts, I'm going to attempt to celebrate what little joy I have received and the life that abounds around me today.

In January of this year, I lost my black lab to cancer.  Then I lost Luna and my other wild friends due to poisoning and now my german shepherd has been diagnosed with cancer as well.  Oh, my heart breaks so.  Although I do feel some relief thanks to the distraction of having to care for my dog which is so time consuming ( bandages, special food preparation, etc..).  Several friends and relatives have been diagnosed with cancer as well.  It's overwhelming and bizarre.

Through it all, I know that there is some greater purpose in all this suffering and that eventually, I will not feel as burdened with sadness as I do today.

One good thing occured...we have a new president of the USA!  Yes, yes, hip hip hooray.  I fell to my knees and sobbed with relief that morning that I heard this great news.  It's been a terribly long eight years under our current regime.

I send you my best holiday wishes that you and the rest of the folks here greet the new year with a happy heart and that peace, joy and prosperity be yours throughout the new year.

Blessings, Lizzie
